Greener Refrigeration: Williams Achieves ‘Zero to Landfill’
Williams continues to set new standards in greener manufacturing for the catering industry with the realisation of no less than seven of its key Greenlogic targets. They include a 44% reduction in packaging, a 37% reduction in energy consumption and a 30% reduction in waste produced – the latter of which has resulted in the company achieving ‘zero to landfill’ status. All of this has been accomplished in just three years.
When Williams first attained the environmental certification ISO14001 in 2009 the seven targets were set to achieve by 2015, as part of its Greenlogic initiative. To have met them in only three years has taken a huge team effort and Williams is very proud of this success.
Alongside the objectives on waste, energy and packaging, Williams has phased out the use of Solvent –VOC, abated its emissions from foam gas, pioneered the use of green refrigerants, and reduced and promoted the recycling of consumables.
The ethos of Greenlogic is to ensure Williams apply environmental considerations to every part of its operations – from the development of greener refrigeration for customers through to its manufacturing and sales operations.
We are continuing the process, whether it is through replacing hand towels with energy-efficient air dryers, investigating the most environmentally efficient methods of waste management, or launching low-energy products.
Williams R&D team is continuing its development programme to further improve the energy efficiency of the company’s products. Williams two door Jade counter with hydrocarbon refrigerant is shown to be the most energy efficient counter of its kind, according to the Carbon Trust’s ETL and future releases will enhance Williams’ position as a leader in sustainable, energy efficient refrigeration for the catering industry.
Greenlogic Management Targets
1. Energy usage: reduce electricity and gas consumption by 5% year on year
2. Process waste: reduce waste to landfill year on year
3. Packaging: reduce requirement, minimise materials by 2013
4. Solvent-VOC: phase out by 2013
5. Foam gas: abatement of emissions by 2015
6. Refrigerants: promote use of green alternatives
7. Recycling: reduce consumables, recycle materials
